Abdul Rivai


Abdul Rivai, lived in 1871-1933, his profession a doctor, journalist, author of anationalist. He is the son of the Mountain King, a school teacher in Palembang Malay.He studied at the medical school in Batavia, Java by the Dutch East Indies governmentscholarships in 1886-1894.

As a student, he had started writing articles for newspapers. After graduating in 1894,he was placed in Medan. During five years of practicing physicians Java in Medan,and managed to raise money to continue school in the Netherlands.

Of the parents who are still conservative, dressed in Europe alone is considered to convert to Christianity, but his determination to make it successful independentlyovercome all the difficulties. Rival 1899 went to Holland, only a year studying at the University of Utrecht, there are rules that doctors are not allowed to take examsJavanese arts (doctor) before it has a high school diploma Netherlands.

Pressure for progress in overcoming these natives as well. After several years oflearning English, French, German, Latin and Greek in addition to the Dutch language,he successfully passed the state exam (staatssexamen) high school in Amsterdam in1906 and with that he is entitled to continue the lesson at the Institute Pasteur in Parisand reached the title of Doctor in University of Gent, Belgium.

Over in Europe, Riva actively developing its ability to compose. Since 1901 until 1907became editor of the Star is published in the Dutch East Indies. Back to soil water,Rivai stationed as a military doctor in Cimahi in Padang in 1911 and 1912. In thatposition a lot of experience humiliation Rival Dutch colonial society.

Although in all respects not inferior to Europeans, he is still regarded as Inlander, isstrengthen a sense of nationalism that is assigned to the essay. Rival finally quit as aprivate physician in Surabaya in 1917, then in the final in Jakarta and Semarang.

1918-1924 years in the Volksraad Abdul Rivai sit as a member of the designatedchoice of Governor-General. Establishment Medische Hoogeschool is one victorypersistent struggle against the opposition parties in the colonial Dutch East Indies andin Holland itself.

Rival writings collected and published in a book called Koloniale Tragedie. Dr AbdulRiva died in 1933 and was buried in Bandung.
